問1. トーストマスターとはどのような団体ですか？
トーストマスターズ・インターナショナル（Toastmasters International）とは、話し方、パブリック・スピーキング（大勢の人前で話すこと）、リーダーシップ・スキルの上達を目的とする、アメリカ発祥の国際的な非営利教育団体です。135か国で約33万人の会員が学んでいます。日本国内には、約180のクラブ、4000人の会員がいます。
Q1. What kind of organization is Toastmasters International?
Toastmasters International is a global nonprofit educational organization that operates clubs worldwide for the purpose of helping members improve their communication, public speaking, and leadership skills.. Its membership is composed of more than 332,000 people. Members improve their speaking and leadership skills by attending one of the 154,400 clubs in 135 countries that make up our global network of meeting locations. We are 4000 members in 180 clubs In Japan.
問2. スピーチや英語を指導してくれる先生はいるのでしょうか？
入会すると、最初の3回のスピーチや、種々の相談を１対１でしてくれる「メンター」がつきます。 しかし、トーストマスターズの一つの特徴として、先生や教授のような、教えることに特化したプロフェッショナルな存在はいません。会員自身が生徒であり、先生であり、フィードバックを受ける側であり与える側でもあります。
Q2. Can I learn from some teachers in the club?
We don’t have a professional teacher. Each member is expected to take both roles of a teacher and student in learning and improving, which means that we provide feedback for one another.
問3．どのような人が所属しているのでしょうか？
トーストマスターズの入会条件は、「18歳以上の男女」です。世界を見渡せば、18歳の誕生日を待って入会したという学生や、100歳を超えて活動を続けているという方もいらっしゃいます。 コスモス・トーストマスターズクラブには、20代から70代まで、様々な年代のメンバーが所属しています。男女比は、2016年6月現在、男性11名、女性16名（合計27名）で、女性の割合が高いクラブとなっています。
Q3. What kind of people participate in your club?
Anyone who is 18 years old or older can be admitted for membership. In Toastmasters Clubs all over the world, there are students ranging from 18 years old when they enter their clubs to participants who continue being active even over 100 years old! In Cosmos Toastmasters Club, there are various ages of 20’s〜70’s, and we have 8 men and 13 women (total 21members as of February 2016).There are more women than men and the club has a splendid atmosphere.

Q4. How many times can we join the meeting as a guest?
You can join our meeting up to three times as a guest for free. In the meantime, you can think over whether this club would fit you or not.

Please do not worry about that. You can attend when you are available.
問6. 見学から入会までの流れを教えてください。
入会を決意されましたら、例会最後のゲストコメントで表明するか、またはメンバーにお伝えください。会員担当がメンバー登録のためのフォームをお送りします。また同時に入会式（新入会員をお迎えするセレモニー）の準備を行います。 入会式が終わったら、会計担当が会費を受け取り、ウェブサイトで国際本部に会費を送金して、あなたの情報を登録し、メンバーになります。その後はクラブのメーリングリストや、easy-Speak（トーストマスターズ専用のオンライシステム）などに情報を登録して全てが完了です。次の例会からスピーチや役割に挑戦していただけます。
Q6. How do you proceed a membership application?
When you decide to be a member, please tell your decision at the meeting or to one of Cosmos TMC members. Then you get the application form and preparation for the induction ceremony is started by the Vice President Membership. After the induction ceremony, you have to pay the membership fee. We send it to Toastmasters International, and register you. Finally the process to be a member is completed with registration for mailing list and Easy-speak (for the exclusive use for members).
問7. 会費はいくらですか？
2016年2月現在、入会金3000円、会費月1000円です。4月と10月の更新時期前に、半年分の6000円をお支払いただきます。他のトーストマスターズクラブに所属している方、また過去にトーストマスターズメンバーだった方は、入会金は不要です。（ただし新しくマニュアルを購入したい場合は、購入費が必要です）
Q7. How much does it cost to become a member of your Club?
Initial entry fee including registration and textbooks from Toastmasters International costs 3,000yen. Our monthly dues are 1,000 yen, which we collect once in 6 months. For the person who is belonging to some other clubs or the person who was the member in the past, there are no entrance fees. (If you need a new textbook, you need to purchase.)
問8. 会費以外にかかる費用はありますか？
飲食付きの例会への参加費（年に1～2回開催）、追加のマニュアルの購入、会場までの交通費、全国大会の参加費などはご自身の負担になります。毎回の例会で、会場費や資料コピー代などはありません。
Q8. Does it cost to be a member besides the entrance and monthly fee?
It cost for you to attend the special meeting with meals, which are held once or twice a year. Moreover, you need to pay your own transportation fee, additional textbook and entry fee for national conference.
問9.途中でやめた場合は返金してもらえますか？
会費の更新は半年に一度（4月と10月）で、このとき、半年分の会費を国際本部に納金します。その後の半年の間に退会した場合、返金はありません。
Q9. If I withdraw from the club, would you refund the entry fee or monthly due?
After freezing the membership, is membership fee reduced? Membership fee is updated every six months. We need to pay a six-month fee to international office. After paying, we cannot refund it to you.
問10. 会員同士は連絡をどうやってとりあっているのですか？
連絡用にメーリングリストを使用しています。またFacebookアカウントを持っているメンバーは、メンバー交流用のグループがあります。
Q10. How usually do the members contact each other?
We use the mailing list. And we have the group page for exchange on Facebook.
問11. 月２回の開催とありますが、仕事が忙しく必ず参加出来るか不安です。必ず出ないといけませんか？
クラブとしては月２回の出席をお薦めしておりますが、当然、ご都合により参加できない日も出てくると思います。無理なく参加することが、継続につながります。
Q11.Even though the meeting is held twice a month, I’m worried about whether or not I can attend all meetings because I’m busy with my work. Do I have an obligation to attend all?
We recommend you to attend all meetings, but it is natural that you should not be able to attend all meetings. Please attend without exerting too much pressure on yourself.
問12. どの位の頻度でスピーチはまわってくるのですか？
基本的に立候補が優先されます。スピーチをたくさんやりたいという方は、1～2ヵ月に1度のペースで進められます。逆に忙しくてスピーチの準備が難しい方は、クラブの担当者（教育担当）やメンターに相談しながら、無理のないペースで進めていくことが可能です。
Q12.How often can I make a speech?
We basically give the first priority to the volunteer. If you want to make a speech a lot, you might make once in two months. When it is difficult for you to prepare the speech, you can make it at your own pace, consulting your mentor.
問13. 日本語が話せなく参加できますか？
コスモス・トーストマスターズクラブは英語のクラブですので、日本語が話せなくてもご心配無用です。
Q13.Is it possible to attend the meeting though I can’t speak Japanese?
Cosmos Toastmasters Club is English club! All session is conducted in English. So there is no need to worry about Japanese.
問14. トーストマスターズクラブの例会は全て英語で行われているのですか？
コスモス・トーストマスターズクラブは英語クラブですので、基本的に例会中は英語のみを使用します。 現在日本には様々なクラブがあります。日本語のみで例会を行っているクラブ、英語のみのクラブ、日本語と英語のバイリンガルクラブ、中国語のクラブ、フランス語のクラブなど。 トーストマスターズの発祥地はアメリカで、トーストマスターズクラブがある135か国の共通言語は英語です。トーストマスターズから提供されるマニュアルや会報誌、動画、メールなども英語です。（日本語で提供されている資料もあります）
Q14.Are club sessions conducted all in English?
Yes, we basically use only English because Cosmos Toastmasters Club is English club. There are several types of clubs in Japan depending of the language, such as Japanese, English, bilingual of English and Japanese, Chinese, and French. Toastmasters club has been originated is USA, then common language worldwide is English. All manuals, newsletters, magazines, movies, published by Toastmasters Club is in English. (There are some translated in Japanese)
問15. 会員の英語のレベルはどうですか？
英語ネイティブ、海外滞在歴、留学経験のあるメンバーなど英語レベルは様々です。一方で、数年前から本格的に英語の勉強を始めたという日本語クラブ出身のメンバーもいます。 コスモス・トーストマスターズは、英語力に自信のない方の参加も歓迎しています。英語の上手な方と一緒に活動することで、学習意欲も刺激されますよ。
Q15.How is the English level of your club?
The English language level in our club varies from person to person. Some members have experienced to stay or to study abroad, while others started to study English several years ago. Cosmos TMC gives a big welcome to everyone who challenges to achieve your goal. English level is no object! Attending the club activity with good English speakers make you motivated to learn!
問16. 英語力に不安がありますが、どの程度の英語レベルが必要とされますか？
少なくとも、中学・高校で習った基本的な英語力があれば例会に参加できます。なぜなら、スピーチにおいては、分かりやすい、やさしい英語で表現することが大切だからです。また、トーストマスターズクラブの例会は、事前に役割を決めて臨みますので、発言の内容を準備することもできます。 中には即座にスピーチを求められるセッションや、ディスカッションなどを行うこともありますが、練習と捉えて積極的に挑戦していただければと思います。やっていくうちに、少しずつ慣れて上達していきます。
Q16.I am worried about my ability of English. What level do I need to join your club?
At least, you can join our club with a basic ability of English learned in junior and senior high school. We think it is important for a speaker to express with a simple and clear English. And we are assigned the role in advance, which enable you to prepare for what you are going to speak in the meeting. Meanwhile, we have the impromptu session to make some short speeches or discussions instantly. We are trying to make it better at every meeting. Let’s challenge together proactively! As you keep challenging, you improve more and more.
問17. スピーチやプレゼンテーションのスキルアップの為ではなく、英語学習を目的として通いたいのですがその様な目的でも参加しても良いのでしょうか？
もちろん可能です。コスモス・トーストマスターズクラブでも、英語スキルの向上を目指して入会した会員がいます。月２回の英語のみでのコミュニケーションの時間は、英語力向上に大きな効果があると思います。 ただしトーストマスターズクラブは学校ではありません。例会中に文法や単語を一から学んだりできるわけではありません。またボランティア組織のため、運営への協力が求められることもあります。その点、ご了承いただければと思います。
Q17.May I join your club in order to learn English, not to improve skills of speech or presentation?
Of course, we absolutely welcome you! Some members joined our club for the same reason as you. We have meetings twice in a month in only English, which have a great effect on your improvement of English skill. However we ask your understanding in advance that in some cases you need to cooperate with us to manage our club because Toastmasters Club is not a school but a volunteer organization.
問18. 皆さんのように話せるか不安です。
最初から上手にできるのであれば、勉強する必要はありませんよね。できないからこそ練習する場が必要なのです。コスモス・トーストマスターズのメンバーも最初はできませんでした。だからこそ新メンバーの不安を理解し、チャレンジを心から応援しています。初めてであればできないことは当然です。メンバーはあなたを温かく見守っていますので、萎縮することなく、目標に向かってチャレンジしていただきたいと思います。
Q18.I am worried about whether I can speak as well as members.
If you are sure that you can make it well now, you don’t need to learn. Beginners are not good at speaking, which is especially why we need a good opportunity to exercise! All of us can understand new member’s anxiety and necessity to support them because all of us couldn’t make it well when we first started. It is natural that you should be afraid of failing. We members are watching over new members with warm and care so that you will challenge forward and reach your goal without cowering.
問19. 例会時間以外でどのくらい負担がかかりますか？準備は大変ですか？
担当する役割によって負担は異なりますが、少なくとも準備スピーチや司会などの役割に当たっている場合、事前の準備は不可欠です。準備にかける時間や労力は、スピーチの熟練度や英語能力、状況によって異なります。ただし、しっかりと準備し役割に臨むことによって、自信がつき、様々なスキルが向上していくことは確かです。でも、準備ができないからといって、失敗を恐れないでください。トーストマスターズではいくら失敗しても皆が温かく歓迎してくれます。失敗を重ねて上達してゆく場です。
Q19.How much hour do I need for the meeting in addition to present the meeting? Is it hard to prepare for the meetings?
It varies depending on your role. At least in case of taking a role of prepared speaker or TMOD, careful preparation is essential to make a good meeting. It is certain that you will get confidence and improved various skills by careful preparations and challenges. Even though you missed careful preparation, don’t be afraid of failing. In Cosmos Toastmasters Club, no matter how you may make mistakes, all member keep to encourage you with warm feelings.
問20. 指導者がおらず、会員の大半が日本人ならば、英語の発音などには効果がないのでは？
1人で勉強していると、発音を意識する機会はあまりありませんよね。しかし人前に立ち聴衆を意識すると、「聞き取りやすい英語を」という意識が芽生え、発音に気を遣うようになります。また、ネイティブスピーカーのスピーチや、全国大会などで綺麗な発音のスピーチを聞く機会も自然と増えます。トーストマスターズへの参加は、英語の発音に対する意識を変えるきっかけになると思います。
Q20.I am wondering whether it is not useful to improve English pronunciation because there are no teachers and most of the members are not native speakers.
You don’t have opportunity to be conscious of English pronunciation if you study alone. But when you speak in public, you must be aware of audience, which leads to build up a sense that you try to speak with correct pronunciation. Speaking in public makes your pronunciation better. And you will have a lot of opportunities to listen to good speeches spoken by native speakers or people who speak with beautiful pronunciation in competition. To join Cosmos Toastmasters Club will be a chance for you to change your mind of English pronunciation.

Q21.There are no teacher, at the same place, with the same curriculum. In such circumstance, can I expect to improve my conversation facility?
It is true that members feel their improvement and they are obviously improving. There are a lot of roles to make the good meetings, checking grammar, giving a feedback to speakers and so on. After you practice making a speech over and over again, you can challenge to show it to a lot of audience in competition.
